Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of alms from a non-material perspective as understood by scholars of hadith and fiqh. In Islamic literature, alms are not only limited to giving wealth, but also include social and spiritual actions such as smiling, giving good advice, removing disturbances on the road, and forms of empathy and service to others. This study uses a qualitative approach with a library research method, analyzing hadith texts and the views of classical and contemporary scholars from the disciplines of hadith and fiqh. The results of the study show that scholars interpret non-material alms as an integral part of Islamic moral values that aim to form a generous character and strengthen social solidarity. This broad understanding of the meaning of alms shows that Islam pays great attention to aspects of social welfare through methods that can be reached by all levels of society, not only limited to those who have wealth. This finding is important to broaden society's insight into the practice of alms as a universal social ethical instrument.
