Abstract

Culture in Indonesia, particularly on the island of Java, holds a wealth of intangible treasures, one of which is oral tradition. This abundant richness is not merely a measure of an advanced life, but also a sign that civilization can be built through the construction of oral transmission. One example of cultural wealth in Java that is still believed by the local community around Yogyakarta is the oral story of Mbah Bregas. With the existence of this tale, many people from outside Yogyakarta and its surroundings come to witness it, even turning it into a form of religious tourism. To examine the figure of Mbah Bregas, its tourism potential, and oral literature, this study employs Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological approach, Travel Literature, and Albert B. Lord’s Oral Literature theory. The results of the analysis reveal that the figure of Mbah Bregas holds legitimacy from the community who continue to believe in him to this day, which is referred to as popular legitimacy. Based on this popularity, and through the analysis of Reporting the World, the village where Mbah Bregas rests has the potential to become a well-known tourist village, considering the still-massive spread of oral transmission.
