Abstract

This study explores the narrative construction in the novel Mamo Zein by Moh. Said Romdhan ‎Al-Buthi using A.J. Greimas’s semiotic approach. The research method employed is ‎descriptive qualitative. The data source is the novel Mamo Zein, with data consisting of ‎narrative excerpts that reflect actantial structures and the protagonist’s transformation stages. ‎The data analysis technique applied is content analysis based on Greimas's actantial model ‎and functional structure. The results reveal that the six actants sender (Sufi values), object ‎‎(spiritual enlightenment), subject (Zein), helper (Sufi mentors and mystical experiences), ‎opponent (worldly temptations and social pressures), and receiver (society) are cohesively ‎constructed and support the narrative development. The main character, Zein, undergoes a ‎spiritual transformation reflected in the stages of competence, performance, and sanction. In ‎conclusion, the novel presents a strong religious narrative imbued with Sufi meanings ‎through interconnected and transformative actantial relations.‎
