Abstract

The novel Qolbu Layl by Naguib Mahfouz chronicles the journey of a young man's quest for his identity. The novel under scrutiny in this study is characterized by an array of themes, including existential, social, political, and psychological elements. The appeal of the novel is attributable to the profound narrative it presents. The present study aims to analyze the ideological cynicism found in the novel "Qolbu Layl" using Slavoj Žižek's theory of ideological cynicism, with the urgency of renewing Žižek's theory. The research is qualitative in nature with a descriptive analytical approach. The material object of this study is the novel "Qolbu Layl," with the formal object being Slavoj Žižek's theory of ideological cynicism. The primary focus of this analysis is the ideological cynicism that is pervasive in the text. The present study employs content analysis to examine the text and identify the forms of ideological cynicism present in the novel. The findings of the present study suggest that the novel "Qolbu Layl" contains a substantial number of literary works that are pertinent to Slavoj Žižek's theory of ideological cynicism. The final findings reveal that the ideological cynicism embedded in the text generates an ideological fantasy, which is a continuation of ideological cynicism. This is exemplified by the main character's realization that while working as a singer, he must sacrifice luxury and a secure future.
