Plagiarism Policy

The editorial board of Ars Sacra: Journal of Art and Religion recognizes that plagiarism is a serious breach of academic integrity and is therefore committed to enforcing strict policies to prevent, detect, and penalize all forms of plagiarism in submitted manuscripts.

All manuscripts submitted to Ars Sacra will be checked for originality using Turnitin plagiarism detection software. The journal allows a maximum similarity index of 20%. Manuscripts exceeding this threshold will be returned to the author for revision and resubmission.

Levels of Plagiarism and Corresponding Actions

1. Minor Plagiarism

  • Definition: A small portion of text is copied from another source without proper citation, but no original data or significant idea is taken.

  • Action: A formal warning is issued to the author(s), and the manuscript is returned for correction and proper citation.

2. Intermediate Plagiarism

  • Definition: A substantial portion of the manuscript is copied from existing work without appropriate referencing, though no data or unique findings are involved.

  • Action: The manuscript is rejected, and the author(s) are banned from submitting to Ars Sacra for a period of one year.

3. Severe Plagiarism

  • Definition: Large sections of the manuscript reproduce original findings, arguments, or creative content from another published work without acknowledgment.

  • Action: The manuscript is rejected, and the author(s) are banned from submission to the journal for a period of five years.


Author Responsibility

All authors listed on the manuscript are considered equally responsible for the integrity and originality of the content submitted. By submitting to Ars Sacra, authors confirm that they have read and agreed to the journal’s Copyright Notice and that the work is free of plagiarism.

In cases where a penalty is applied, all authors involved will be subject to the same sanctions, regardless of individual contribution or awareness of the plagiarism.


This policy is intended to uphold the scholarly and ethical standards of the journal and to preserve the trust of the academic community.
