Abstract

In the perspective of the sociology of literature, literary works are seen as reflections of societal life, including behavior, thought patterns, and individuals' social actions. Therefore, this research aims to identify and describe the social actions of characters in the literary work Wesel Pos, a novelette by Ratih Kumala. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The primary data sources are the characters' dialogues and the narrator’s narration in the novelette Wesel Pos by Ratih Kumala. The research adopts the literary sociology approach based on Max Weber’s theory of social action and its types. Data collection techniques include thorough reading and transcription of relevant passages. The data analysis technique used is descriptive-analytic for each identified data point. The results of this research identified 12 instances of social action, classified into 3 instrumental rational actions, 4 value-rational actions, 4 affective actions, and 1 traditionalaction.
